How do we address the behaviors, often unrecognized “little things” that foster sentiments and attitudes of inequity and incivility? Microaggressions speak to the attitudes, dispositions, and comments that many times lead to the devaluing of members in our university community. This presentation will focus on recognizing, understanding, and ultimately managing the impact of microaggressions in our academic environment.
About the presenter:
Shakoor Ward is Penn State’s Professional Development Coordinator in the Affirmative Action Office. He delivers diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) professional development sessions, including presentations, training, workshops, classes, search committee briefings, and webinars. Dr. Ward has a dynamic history of advancing diversity and inclusion in previous scholarly and practitioner leadership roles in both domestic and international settings. He was a Global Educational Consultant for eight years, providing a multitude of culturally inclusive workforce education and development services to Higher Education institutions and non-profit organizations. Ward earned a BBA in Operations Management from the University of Cincinnati, an M.S.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Purdue University, and a Ph.D. in Workforce Education and Development from The Pennsylvania State University.
