Presentation Abstract

The standardized field sobriety test used by police to detect alcohol intoxication relies heavily on observable motor impairment. However, results from laboratory studies indicate that stimulant drugs, including highly caffeinated energy drinks, can antagonize alcohol-induced impairments in gross motor control while increasing the abuse potential of alcohol by enhancing drug-induced reward. Emerging priorities for impaired driving research given the changing landscape of alcohol and other drug misuse will be discussed.
