About the Speaker

Dr. Kamilah Majied, MSW, Ph.D. is a mental health therapist, social work
educator, researcher, and internationally engaged consultant on sustaining work
for justice using meditative practices. Dr. Majied enjoys engaging people in
experiencing wonder, humor, and insight through transforming oppressive
patterns and deepening relationships toward ever-improving individual,
organizational, and communal wellness. After 15 years of teaching at Howard
University, Dr. Majied is now Professor of Social Work at California State
University, Monterey Bay. She has taught contemplative practice from several
perspectives including mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, mindfulness and
racial justice, Buddhism and mental health, and mindfulness practices to
preserve the environment.

As the founder of Majied Contemplative Consulting, she has used meditative
practices to guide organizations towards actively dismantling structural
oppression through improved processes and policies. Dr. Majied also served as
the founding development consultant for the Mind & Life Institute Global
Majority Leadership and Mentorship Program. As Co-investigator in the
Contemplative Coping During COVID Research Project at the UC Davis Center for
Mind and Brain, she has helped to create culturally sensitive study materials,
guiding the presentation and publication of the findings and serving as a
clinically trained, trauma-informed resource for study participants.

Dr. Majied is the author of many articles on contemplative practice, as well as
chapters in Contemplative Approaches to Psychotherapy, 2nd Ed, and Black and
Buddhist: What Buddhism can Teach us about Race, Resilience, Transformation and
Freedom, the first anthology of African American Buddhists’ wisdom. She is the
author of Joyfully Just: Black Wisdom and Buddhist Insights for Liberated Living
(Sounds True, April 2024).
