Jessica Saalfield is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Penn State Schuylkill. Her research takes an interdisciplinary approach to developing a comprehensive and foundational understanding of the effects of substance use and misuse in geographically diverse adolescents/young adults.

The overarching goal of Dr. Saalfield’s research is to investigate the role of geography on substance use behaviors, with a specific focus on alcohol and cannabis attitudes, motivations, and behaviors in adolescents and college students. It is her hope that her work will aid in developing improved prevention and intervention techniques aimed at these communities as well as providing a mechanism to impact public and social health policies.

My investigation into the mechanisms underlying the risk-taking and substance use behaviors among rural adolescents and young adults will provide a more distinct understanding of substance use in these populations.
