Preparation Phase
Before beginning any student-based programming, take steps to prepare the entire educational community to accept and benefit from a Whole-School Mindfulness approach. Spending adequate time in the Preparation Stage can help the implementation process to go more smoothly and sustainably.
Communication / Buy-in
Communicate with students, staff, parents, and other members of the educational community to explain what Whole-School Mindfulness is and how it will be implemented. Listening to concerns from stakeholders at all levels and offering introductory mindfulness sessions in public spaces like libraries can be key to getting buy-in and support from the wider community.
Staff Preparation
Provide program, process, and mindfulness training for all staff who will be involved in implementing Whole-School Mindfulness. Training should begin with helping staff focus on their own mindfulness and wellbeing so that they are equipped to support others in this area.
Implementation Plan
Develop a full plan, including developmental scope and sequence, for the implementation of all components of Whole-School Mindfulness. If an implementation plan has been provided by a curriculum developer, ensure that it is appropriate within the context of the school.
Resource Procurement
Ensure that all necessary resources are in place. This may include financial resources, human resources, supplies, physical spaces, and other specific items needed for the implementation of WSM programs and practices. If necessary, seek out external help to source essential resources.
