Molly Countermine is a beloved Associate Teaching Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State’s University Park campus. Her unique teaching style combines storytelling, humor, and conversation to create lively and engaged classes. She has received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Health and Human Development for nine years and running. Her students often say her classes changed their lives, which she says is the best award she could ever get.

Dr. Countermine delivered an emotionally moving TEDxPSU talk in March 2021, during which she describes going on a journey of personal growth after experiencing some unexpected obstacles in life, learning that it’s okay to not always be happy. She discusses how our brains aren’t wired for constant positivity and how we can live a fulfilling life through mindfulness. In her talk, she redefines what it means to be happy and how we can achieve this sought-after state. She also discusses the use of meditation with her students at the beginning of class to help them to take a few minutes out of their hectic schedules and begin class with a sense of renewed focus and peace.

Dr. Countermine is also well-known as a local musician, performing regularly with her band, Ted and the hi-fi’s, at downtown bars and restaurants. She lives in State College with her husband, 3 children, 2 dogs, and 2 cats.
