SUMMARY:The Tolerance Break Myth: What over 2 Billion Webpages and Social Media Posts Get Wrong About Cannabis
DESCRIPTION:This talk highlights the gap between confident social media guidance and a thin\, sometimes contradictory evidence base\, and why individualized\, evidence-based harm reduction is needed instead of one-size-fits-all advice.\nThe problem(s) that your research is trying to solve:  Cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) are rising\, but fewer than 5% of people with CUD ever seek treatment\, so most people self-manage their use. “Tolerance breaks” (T-breaks) are one of the most popular self-management strategies—mentioned and recommended on over 2 billion webpages —yet almost no science has tested whether they work. In our own published study of 170 young adults\, taking a T-break was linked to worse outcomes six months later\, including higher hazardous use and CUD severity\, directly contradicting the online resources. This is concerning in light of the many colleges that are now sharing T-break manuals as prevention and intervention approaches. \nThe solution(s) that you’re working on to address the problems: We have replicated our prior findings at longer durations and with other substance use outcomes. Given the push to implement T-breaks as an intervention strategy\, we are currently working on a research proposal that would be the first controlled experimental study of T-breaks\, incorporating both lab-based cannabis administration and real-world daily monitoring (EMA).  We will implement remote contingency management and use mobile technology to evaluate what length of breaks and what other characteristics of young adults are associated with improved outcomes. This data will allow us to better understand short versus long durations on tolerance\, drug effects\, and use patterns. \nAttendees will learn that T-breaks\, despite being marketed as a tolerance-reset strategy\, were linked in our data to increased hazardous use and CUD severity—the opposite of the intended effect. They’ll also learn that not all abstinence is equal: cannabis breaks taken for other reasons (work\, finances\, relationships) showed no such risk\, and longer non-tolerance breaks were linked to improved outcomes\, suggesting that motivation—not just duration—matters.

SUMMARY:Build Your Research Portfolio with Penn State’s Prevention Research Center
DESCRIPTION:This interactive seminar will encourage faculty at any Penn State campus to consider how they could build their research portfolios through numerous collaboration and affiliation opportunities available through the Edna Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center at Penn State. \nFaculty affiliated with the Prevention Research Center use innovative science to build a healthier and just world for individuals\, families\, and communities. They believe in promoting human flourishing and preventing problems that cause human suffering. \nSarah Chilenski\, Research Professor at the Prevention Research Center\, co-lead of the Group to Reduce Inequities in Prevention\, and Senior Faculty Mentor with Penn State’s Office of Educational Equity\, will lead a panel discussion with five faculty connected through the PRC: \nPanelists\n\nSebrina Doyle-Fosco\, Assistant Research Professor\, Human Development and Family Studies\nBlake Colaianne\, Assistant Research Professor\, Human Development and Family Studies\nGreg Fosco\, Research Professor\, Professor of Human Development and Family Studies\nMeg Small\, PRC Director for Social Impact; Associate Research Professor of Human Development and Family Studies\nMax Crowley\, PRC Director; Professor\, Human Development and Family Studies and Public Policy\n\nThese faculty conduct research focused on well-being and social and emotional health\, but each person comes at these topics from a different angle. Perspectives represented in this group include\, but are not limited to: \n\nmindfulness and social emotional programming for teachers and other youth support workers\,\nfamily-systems and wellness carried on through generations\,\nco-design of a human flourishing program for high school students\,\ninterdisciplinary collaboration\,\nentrepreneurship\,\ninnovative methods\,\ntranslating research to practice\,\ncost-benefit of programming\, and\nthe infrastructure supports needed to sustain wellness activities.\n\nAfter brief introductions\, Dr. Chilenski will pitch questions to the panelists about their current research\, their pathway to get to their current areas of inquiry\, how they overlap and complement each other’s research\, and their unique contribution in current collaborative relationships. Discussion will include future directions and opportunities for collaboration. We will hold the last 25 to 30 minutes for attendees to ask their own questions and to share their perspectives on related areas of research. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to follow up with one-on-one mentoring sessions with Dr. Chilenski to strategize next steps to explore opportunities to build their research portfolios and learn more about the benefits of affiliating with the Prevention Research Center.

DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker\nDr. Shaw is co-principal investigator on the project: Integrated model for promoting parenting and early school readiness in pediatrics. Dr. Shaw is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. At Pitt\, he also serves as the Director of the Center for Parents and Children and the Director of the Pitt Parents and Children Laboratory (PPCL)\,with joint appointments in the Schools of Medicine and Education\, and Centers for Social and Urban Research and Translational Research. Since receiving his Ph.D. in child clinical and developmental psychology from the University of Virginia in 1988\, his primary interest has involved tracing the early developmental precursors of early problem behavior among at-risk children.
