Supporting Teacher and Leader Wellbeing: Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education

A lecture delivered by Dr. Sebrina Doyle Fosco (Penn State)

In this presentation, Dr. Doyle Fosco will share some of her research on the use of mindfulness‑based programs and practices to strengthen resilience and support wellbeing in educational settings. She will highlight findings from the CARE program, including impacts directly for teachers and educational leaders, on classroom climate, and on student outcomes. Dr. Doyle Fosco will also discuss challenges that can arise when implementing mindfulness-based programs and practices in school settings and describe adaptations that can improve acceptability in different contexts and for different groups. She will talk about her recent work adapting and piloting a new version of CARE specifically designed for educational leaders. Finally, she will offer brief invitational mindful practices so participants can experience strategies used in school contexts.

Sebrina L. Doyle Fosco, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State University. Her work focuses on promoting flourishing in educational communities. She is a facilitator and master trainer for Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education (CARE), an evidence-based program that supports educators in mindful stress management, emotion regulation, and compassionate responding. Dr. Doyle Fosco has published widely on the use of mindfulness in schools and on teacher and leader wellbeing. She recently redesigned CARE for educational leaders and leads a research grant examining its impact on leaders’ health, wellbeing, and effectiveness.
