Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults develop the social and emotional competencies essential to being a good student, citizen, and worker. The term SEL was established over 20 years ago and while research on the importance of SEL for positive outcomes in students is well established, the field has been experiencing unprecedented attention recently from policy makers and educators who are now seeing it as a critical part of education. Early in the history of the field, CASEL identified five interrelated clusters to define social and emotional competence that were the foundation of its conceptual model (CASEL, 2003; Durlak et al., 2015). Recently, the organization updated its definition of SEL and its theory of action to reflect a more systemic approach to district and schoolwide programming. The goal of this presentation will be to present CASEL’s current conceptual model of SEL and to describe how it is being validated in an 8-district demonstration project.
