The PROSPER (PROmoting School-community-university Partnerships to Enhance Resilience) project tested the long-term viability and impact of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) in community settings. EBIs to prevent adolescent substance use and behavior problems were implemented in seven communities in Pennsylvania and seven in Iowa, using the Cooperative Extension System as the linking agent between communities and prevention scientists. Fourteen additional communities served as the control group. The results of the 10-year-long PROSPER study indicated that EBIs can be sustained with high quality and achieve measurable, economically viable public health impact; however, building this capacity takes time and resources.
