In this talk, Dr. Vanness will discuss how we assess the value of health interventions through an economic lens, including an introduction to the theoretical foundations and history of cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis.

Then briefly introduce the multiphase optimization strategy (MOST) (Collins et al.), a paradigm for designing and evaluating multicomponent health interventions to balance effectiveness, affordability, scalability, and efficiency. Will also describe a new approach to selecting optimized interventions under MOST based on the concept of “value efficiency” (Strayhorn, Collins, and Vanness), designed to achieve the most desirable health outcomes subject to resource constraints.

About the Speaker

David Vanness is a health economist with over 20 years of experience in academic, healthcare and industry research environments. Expertise in econometrics, decision analysis, Bayesian network meta-analysis, clinical trials, machine learning, and real-world evidence.
