Stress dyregulates. Exposure to adversity in childhood has been linked with several metabolic consequences in adolescence and adulthood, including hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity. In this presentation, Dr. Francis will discuss her current work which explores links between exposure to early life stress and obesity in youth. Using a latent-class approach,
she will describe racial/ethnic differences in profiles of risk, based on exposure to 6 adverse childhood events, including having an incarcerated parent, exposure to neighborhood violence, and living with a parent with a substance abuse problem. Data were drawn from a national U.S. sample of over 40,000 youth ages 10 to 17 years from the 2011 National Survey of Children’s Health. The mechanisms by which early exposure to stress is linked to cardiometabolic outcomes will be discussed.
