University-Head Start Partnership

Under a three-year (1999-2002) grant from the National Institute of Health/Head Start Bureau (DHHS), the Prevention Research Center has established a partnership with two Pennsylvania Head Start sites: Lycoming-Clinton Head Start and Capital Area Head Start. The primary goal of the project is to develop, implement and evaluate a teacher-implemented, school-based, prevention program to meet the mental health needs of Head Start children. University and Head Start staff will work together to modify the Promoting Alternative THinking Skills ( PATHS ) universal prevention curriculum for preschool children and expand the family component of the program. The project will involve a randomized clinical trial to examine possible benefits of the program in emotional self-regulation, attention, communication, and problem solving in children, as well as improved parent-child interactions, communication, and problem solving for parents.
