Inhalants Abuse and Dependence

National Institute on Drug Abuse

Start Date: 2002

Program Development Phase

[what is it?]

The major goals of this project are to (1) develop and test Substance Abuse Module (SAM) questions specifically for abuse and dependence diagnoses related to the different types of inhalants (solvents, aerosols, gases, and nitrites), (2) study the usefulness of separate diagnoses for the different types of inhalants among users of inhalants, and (3) explore the experiences of inhalant users, parents, and health care professionals regarding inhalant use (e.g., how did they learn about inhalants, did their inhalant use lead to trying other drugs).
