The Prevention Research Center and Department of Human Development and Family Studies of The Pennsylvania State University (www.prevention.psu.edu) announce the availability of multiple positions, including two research associate positions and a post-doctoral scholar. The research associate positions are in the area of community and family prevention research and are available immediately. These positions will offer the opportunity for involvement in several innovative research projects being conducted by Dr. Mark Feinberg and collaborators (see projects listed: http://prevention.psu.edu/people/feinberg_m.html). Applications are invited from individuals who are interested in: (a) a position as a data analyst; and (b) a position combining some data analyst responsibilities with the opportunity to develop and serve as lead-author on papers utilizing available data sets. Applicants who would like to pursue the second type of position should have a background in child/adolescent development, family research, and/or community risk and prevention, as well as possess strong conceptualization and writing skills. Such an individual will be supported in developing an independent line of investigation.
The post-doctoral position is attached to a NIDA-funded study examining genetic influences on substance use prevention led by Dr. Bo Cleveland and Dr. David Vandenbergh, in collaboration with Drs. Mark Feinberg, Jenae Neiderhiser, and Mark Greenberg. The work will involve examining the extent to which candidate genes condition the impact of interventions on substance use and investigating the interplay between specific genes and family and peer contextual processes as they contribute to substance use from adolescence to young adulthood. This individual will work with Dr. Cleveland and Dr. Vandenbergh, as well as the rest of the research team, on analyzing data and developing manuscripts for publication. This post-doctoral position is scheduled to begin in June 2012.

Implementation Specialist

Penn State Clearinghouse on Military Family Readiness

The Penn State Clearinghouse on Military Family Readiness (Clearinghouse) is a new partnership among Penn State, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Clearinghouse mission is to promote and support the dissemination and use of evidence-based programs and practices designed to enhance the health and well-being of military families. The Clearinghouse also builds the capacity of professionals working with military families to implement evidence-based programs and practices.
The Clearinghouse is currently seeking a candidate for an Implementation Specialist position. Responsibilities include: (a) providing direct proactive technical assistance to professionals adopting evidence-based programs and promising practices; (b) providing instruction and training about prevention science and the enhanced value of evidence-based interventions; (c) assisting professionals with trainings, as needed, in their efforts to utilize evidence-based programs and practices; (d) facilitating collaboration between professionals and program developers and university-based scientists at the Clearinghouse; (e) assisting in interpreting and presenting research findings in terms of their application to implementation science; and (f) other tasks as needed.
The position requires a minimum of a Master's in Human Development; Family Studies; Psychology; Family Sociology, Prevention Science; or other related discipline. In addition, the candidate should have experience and understanding of implementation science.
The individual must possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. The successful candidate must also have the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, anticipate needs, be detail oriented, and be a team player. Experience working with culturally diverse populations is preferred.

The Prevention Research Center at Penn State University is seeking candidates for the position of Evaluation Specialist/Data Analyst with the Evidence-based Prevention and Intervention Support Center (EPISCenter).
The EPISCenter is a research and technical assistance organization supporting nearly 200 sites as they implement a variety of evidence-based prevention and intervention programs targeting delinquency and youth ATOD use. The Evaluation Specialist/Data Analyst will coordinate training and outreach activities aimed at building evaluation capacity within the EPISCenter’s client agencies, schools, and organizations, and engage in data collection and analysis for the EPISCenter. The EPISCenter’s research focuses on the large-scale dissemination of evidence-based programs (Type II translational research as defined by NIDA).
The position requires a Master's degree (Ph.D. preferred) in human development, psychology, or the social sciences, relevant research or training and technical assistance experience, excellent writing skills, and a basic working knowledge of statistical software packages (SPSS/SAS). Clearinghouse Operations Manager
Penn State Clearinghouse for Military Family Readiness
The successful candidate will coordinate the planning and implementation of all components of the interactive Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse is a distribution and implementation infrastructure designed to promote and support the dissemination of evidence-based programs and practices as well as build the capacity of professionals assisting military families. This includes the following:
- Develop protocols for identifying research and scholarly outreach products as well as evidence-based programs for the Clearinghouse on issues related to military family readiness;
- Provide overall leadership, direction, and support for the development of proactive technical assistance for professionals who support military families;
- Provide leadership in identifying evidence-based programs, research, and scholarly outreach products related to promoting military families' resiliency and readiness within a broad focus area (e.g., families, relationships, socio-emotional development, parenting, and/or culturally diverse communities);
- Facilitate the development and dissemination of high-quality research on topics relevant to military families;
- Develop a request-for-proposal process for disseminating extramural funding related to military families;
- Supervise and mentor research associates and technical assistance professionals as appropriate; and
- Work collaboratively with the IT Analyst and the web development staff.
Position requirements: Ph.D. in Prevention Science, Human Development, Family Studies, Psychology, Family Sociology, or Communications, or other related field; experience working within the emerging field of dissemination and implementation science; experience implementing and providing technical assistance relating to evidence-based programs in "real-world settings"; experience working with a wide variety of scholars; expertise developing community-based translational research; commitment to advancing the scholarly study of military families; expertise working with culturally diverse populations; excellent communication and leadership skills and an enthusiastic attitude; a record of programmatic research as denoted by publications, conference presentations, and other scholarly activities; expertise with federal and private funding organizations; and experience and understanding of Cooperative Extension.
This is a 12-month fixed–term position for a non-tenure track faculty member and will be housed within the Social Science Research Institute at the Penn State University Park campus.

Senior Research Technologist

A Project Coordinator is needed for a research study examining peer social dynamics in elementary school classrooms. The Project Coordinator will have two primary areas of responsibility. First, the Project Coordinator will coordinate the scheduling and staffing of school-based assessments (student interviews and surveys; classroom observations). This will involve some travel to schools to schedule assessment dates with teachers, communicating in person and via email with project personnel to staff the scheduled assessments, and working with teachers and project staff to reschedule assessments as necessary. Second, the Project Coordinator will take a lead role in preparing survey and observation materials prior to school-based assessments and in processing those materials for data entry after the assessments are completed. This includes preparing participant consent forms, maintaining a database of participants, coordinating the process of survey preparation (e.g., copying, labeling), working with graduate students to supervise the data entry process, monitoring the hours of undergraduate research assistants and other paid project staff who assist in these tasks, and working with the Project Director to prioritize survey preparation and data entry activities. In the context of these two primary areas of responsibility, the Project Coordinator will need to maintain excellent communication with other project staff via email, weekly project meetings and regular meetings with the Project Director. In addition, the Project Coordinator will spend a small amount of time in office management tasks such as coordinating the submission of time sheets by paid staff, maintaining the office filing/organization system, and ordering new supplies as needed. Requires Bachelor`s degree or equivalent, plus one to two years of work-related experience. This position also requires basic fluency in MS Word and MS Excel; familiarity with MS Access is desirable. Research Associate, PROSPERNet Project
The Prevention Research Center of Pennsylvania State University (www.prevention.psu.edu) announces the availability of an early-career research scientist position in the area of implementation and dissemination research within the PROSPERNet Project. The overarching purpose of the PROSPERNet project is to develop the infrastructure and capacity for expanded implementation of the PROSPER Model to new states. Specifically, this will include: (1) developing a process for selecting and assisting states that are ready for infrastructure development and capacity building toward Model implementation and (2) developing the capacity of a PROSPER Network Team for Scientific and EBI Implementation Support to work with these states. The candidate will work with Mark Greenberg, Daniel Perkins, Mark Feinberg and the team of researchers from Iowa State.
Over the last eight years (with funding from the National Institute of Drug Abuse), Penn State and Iowa State University have developed the PROSPER model (Promoting School-community-university collaborations to Enhance Resilience). PROSPER links three important US infrastructure systems that together create a continuum from science to practice. PROSPER involves the land-grant university, the Cooperative Extension System (Outreach arm of Land Grant universities), and the public school system. By creating new linkages between these systems, PROSPER has achieved science-based community empowerment with demonstrate high quality implementation and long-term sustainability of prevention program in communities.
Applicants should have relevant research experience human development, prevention science, psychology, education, health and human services, or related field. Previous experience in the field of social network analysis, program evaluation, or large scaled translational research would be a plus. The candidate should have at least one year of prior research experience working on a prevention research project with behaviorally-oriented data or strong administrative experience within a university-setting. The Prevention Research Center at Penn State University is seeking candidates for the position of Training and Technical Assistance Coordinator – Community-based Prevention. This position is responsible for providing technical assistance to communities throughout Pennsylvania in their implementation of the Communities That Care risk-focused prevention model for preventing and reducing youth delinquency and substance use.
Responsibilities include regular consultation with Communities That Care sites regarding issues of coalition functioning, risk and resource assessment, program selection and implementation, impact assessment, and sustainability, as well as the development of tools and resources to support existing coalitions.
The Prevention Research Center expects to fill full time positions based at University Park/State College, as well as part-time positions based in Eastern and Western Pennsylvania. The Prevention Research Center is seeking candidates for a Lead Evaluator (Research Associate) for the Evidence-based Prevention and Intervention Support Center (EPISCenter).
The Lead Evaluator will oversee all data collection and analysis for the EPISCenter. Research will focus on the wide scale dissemination of evidence-based programs (Type II translational research as defined by NIDA). Duties include coordination and data analysis of an annual web-based survey of approximately 170 project sites; maintaining all IRB/Human Subjects applications and records, assisting in the development of technical assistance tools related to local program evaluation and collection of implementation and outcome data, as well as providing technical assistance to sites regarding local program outcome assessment. The Lead Evaluator will also coordinate with a subcontractor in the development of a multi-program online data collection, analysis, and reporting system.
Requires Ph.D. in human development, psychology or the social sciences and experience assisting communities with program evaluation. This is a full-time, 12-month position with full University benefits including 75% tuition discount for dependents. The position is funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility for renewal.

The Prevention Research Center of Pennsylvania State University (www.prevention.psu.edu) announces the availability of an early-career research scientist position in the areas of family and community prevention research. The position will offer the opportunity for involvement in several innovative research projects.
Projects include trials of prevention programs aimed at: 1) enhancing the coparenting relationship at the transition to parenthood; 2) improving sibling relationships during middle childhood, and 3) reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes. Involvement in these projects may include a range of activities, including intervention development or refinement, measure selection, intervention implementation, data analysis, and writing/publishing.
Opportunities to gain increased expertise in prevention science-related theory and methods is available through seminars and classes, as well as an opportunity to teach if desired. Applicants will be encouraged and supported in developing an independent line of investigation. Funding for the position is available for two years, with a strong possibility of continuation.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Rural Education and Prevention Research
The College of Education of the Pennsylvania State University is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow with interests in rural education and prevention research. This is a two year appointment (August 2007 - July 2009) and is supported by the National Research Center on Rural Education Support (NRCRES) with grant funding from the Institute of Education Sciences. The position will involve analyses of data and preparation of publications from a broad range of longitudinal, cross-sectional, and randomized control trial intervention studies pertaining to the educational achievement and social adjustment of rural children and adolescents. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to fully participate in the postdoctoral training activities of the Prevention Research Center (www.prevention.psu.edu) at the Pennsylvania State University.
Specific responsibilities: This position will be under the direction of the Director of the NRCRES. Responsibilities will include participation in weekly research conference calls with NRCRES faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, analyses of data, preparation of manuscripts for publication, presentations at national conferences, and occasional involvement in data collection for a national study on rural high school students’ aspirations (primarily in spring of 08). The research and analyses will pertain to the impact of school-based prevention studies in rural schools, the social and behavioral trajectories of children and adolescents at key transition points, school social networks, the development and prevention of antisocial behavior, bullying and victimization, national survey data on teacher retention and special education issues in rural schools, interventions to support distance learning in rural schools, and postsecondary aspirations of rural high school students.
Qualifications: Applicants must have documentation that they will complete a Ph.D. by July of 2007 in a relevant discipline (e.g., educational psychology, developmental psychology, human development, applied developmental science, prevention science, sociology, special education, or school psychology). Candidates must have strong quantitative skills in both variable and person-oriented approaches and have experience with longitudinal and large national databases. Individuals with interests in rural education, peer relations and social development, and prevention research are particularly encouraged to apply.

Part-time positions at the Prevention Research Center (posted 2/17/05)
2 part-time positions are available coding videotaped interaction of families for a prevention research trial. The positions will involve 12-20 hours per week. Applicants should be interested in continuing through the summer and possibly next academic year as well. Hourly compensation will be $8-$14 depending on experience.
Part-time statistical analyst position available. Applicant should be comfortable conducting analyses in SAS, and should have experience with a range of techniques including multilevel analyses. Familiarity with MPLUS a plus.
