The Prevention Research Center of Pennsylvania State University (www.prevention.psu.edu) announces the availability of an early- to mid-career research scientist position in the area of family-focused, community-based prevention research.  The position will offer the opportunity for involvement in several innovative prevention research projects, including the opportunity to publish from existing datasets.  Involvement in current projects may include all phases of the research process, from intervention development to data analysis and writing.  Opportunities to gain increased expertise in prevention science-related theory and analytic methods are available through seminars and classes.  The individual selected will be encouraged and supported in developing, or continuing, an independent line of investigation.  Penn State offers many opportunities for collaboration with experts in a variety of departments, as well as seed grants to develop new ideas.

The Department of Biobehavioral Health, College of Health and Human Development, at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will have an ongoing research program that focuses on the health and behavior of immigrant children and youth in their family or community contexts. The applicant`s research should be translational and integrative, and focus on mechanisms and processes for improving the physical and/or mental health of immigrant children and their families. The focus of the research might include cardiovascular health, obesity, stress coping mechanisms, health impacts of acculturation, and health promotion interventions focused on children and youth, families, or communities. The position is designed to strengthen the department‚s expertise in population based and global health research. Applicants should have a record of scholarly research and will be expected to establish a record of external research funding. The position entails teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. An earned doctorate in health, social, or behavioral science, or a medical degree, and evidence of strong scholarly accomplishments, are required. Project Coordinator Positions, Evidence-based Prevention and Intervention Support Center, Prevention Research Center

The Prevention Research Center is seeking candidates for three (3) positions as Project Coordinator to assist schools and organizations throughout Pennsylvania as they implement evidence-based prevention and intervention programs targeting delinquency, youth drug use, and other adolescent problem behaviors.  Duties include providing technical assistance to communities implementing evidenced-based programs, developing tools and resources to support existing programs, and promoting the adoption of programs in new communities.

A bachelor's degree in prevention, public health, education, human services or a related field, plus 3 years of experience is required (masters degree preferred).

Candidates must have a minimum of two years experience coordinating or implementing one or more of the following evidence-based programs:

Lead Evaluator (Research Associate), Evidence-based Prevention and Intervention Support Center, Prevention Research Center

The Prevention Research Center is seeking candidates for a Lead Evaluator (Research Associate) for the Evidence-based Prevention and Intervention Support Center (EPISCenter). 

The Lead Evaluator will oversee all data collection and analysis for the EPISCenter.  Research will focus on the wide scale dissemination of evidence-based programs (Type II translational research as defined by NIDA).  Duties include coordination and data analysis of an annual web-based survey of approximately 170 project sites; maintaining all IRB/Human Subjects applications and records, assisting in the development of technical assistance tools related to local program evaluation and collection of implementation and outcome data, as well as providing technical assistance to sites regarding local program outcome assessment.  The Lead Evaluator will also coordinate with a subcontractor in the development of a multi-program online data collection, analysis, and reporting system. 

Requires Ph.D. in human development, psychology or the social sciences and experience assisting communities with program evaluation.  This is a full-time, 12-month position with full University benefits including 75% tuition discount for dependents.  The position is funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility for renewal.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Rural Education and Prevention Research

The College of Education of the Pennsylvania State University is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow with interests in rural education and prevention research. This is a two year appointment (August 2007 - July 2009) and is supported by the National Research Center on Rural Education Support (NRCRES) with grant funding from the Institute of Education Sciences. The position will involve analyses of data and preparation of publications from a broad range of longitudinal, cross-sectional, and randomized control trial intervention studies pertaining to the educational achievement and social adjustment of rural children and adolescents. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to fully participate in the postdoctoral training activities of the Prevention Research Center (www.prevention.psu.edu) at the Pennsylvania State University.

Specific responsibilities: This position will be under the direction of the Director of the NRCRES. Responsibilities will include participation in weekly research conference calls with NRCRES faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, analyses of data, preparation of manuscripts for publication, presentations at national conferences, and occasional involvement in data collection for a national study on rural high school students’ aspirations (primarily in spring of 08). The research and analyses will pertain to the impact of school-based prevention studies in rural schools, the social and behavioral trajectories of children and adolescents at key transition points, school social networks, the development and prevention of antisocial behavior, bullying and victimization, national survey data on teacher retention and special education issues in rural schools, interventions to support distance learning in rural schools, and postsecondary aspirations of rural high school students.

Qualifications: Applicants must have documentation that they will complete a Ph.D. by July of 2007 in a relevant discipline (e.g., educational psychology, developmental psychology, human development, applied developmental science, prevention science, sociology, special education, or school psychology). Candidates must have strong quantitative skills in both variable and person-oriented approaches and have experience with longitudinal and large national databases. Individuals with interests in rural education, peer relations and social development, and prevention research are particularly encouraged to apply.

Part-time positions at the Prevention Research Center (posted 2/17/05)

2 part-time positions are available coding videotaped interaction of families for a prevention research trial. The positions will involve 12-20 hours per week. Applicants should be interested in continuing through the summer and possibly next academic year as well. Hourly compensation will be $8-$14 depending on experience.

Part-time statistical analyst position available. Applicant should be comfortable conducting analyses in SAS, and should have experience with a range of techniques including multilevel analyses. Familiarity with MPLUS a plus.
